Flying with Two Boys Under Two

My husband and I planned our first international flight with two kids under two years old as if we were competing in the Amazing Race. We planned for every stage of the trip as well as mentally prepared for any contingency or surprises (as much as possible) along the way.

In one word I would describe flying with two under two as stressful. It is physically and emotionally demanding to get through security with two kids, your carry on, a double stroller and two car seats. During the flight it is exhausting if the children are crying.

Wife: What did you find most useful, please give a top tip to readers out there.

Husband: Take advantage of the staff.

Wife: Um what do you mean?

Husband: Like when we asked if they would help us move things, carry things, and unhook things. One example in particular- when we were getting off plane the flight attendant unhooked car seats and brought it to the door. So we could gather our carry on and our children.

Wife: In hindsight preloading bottles with the right amount of formal (baby), carrying a thermos of hot water (for baby formula) and thermos of warm milk (toddler) facilitated/expedited the feeding process.

Wife: What do you find most helpful:

Husband: Having a special place entrance through security in Toronto.

Wife: What Top 3 equipment or baby gadget did you find most helpful or essential?

Husband: IPhone, baby carrier, and a dolly for the car seats. Not everyone has seats so- runner up item would be an organized wife. Must bring one of those.

Wife: How do you think our baby did?

Husband: Great except for when the baby kept getting waken up by toddler loud protests.

Wife: Any other other tips?

Husband: A strategic seating configuration. Due to oxygen masks you can’t sit two children in the same row. Seat baby in front with a parent and the older one in back with another parent. This arrangement is great because toddler kicks the seat in front and he/she will just be kicking the baby’s seat- thus not bothering anyone. Second reason- young one can see parent in front and the back and toddler can see everyone without turning head.

Mom top 6 gadgets:  Lollipops, iPhone preloaded with faves so you aren’t dependent on wi-fi, favorite food-when they are fussy it is so annoying so make sure they are well fed plus high altitude messes with your senses so make it salty or full on flavor, wipes and extra plastic bag for trash, backpack with leash to burn off energy in terminal before the flight, and fave stuffed animal or blankie.
